HISTORICAL TOUR
Discovering the Ancient City!
If along with the history of leaders,
emperors, great thinkers, and explorers, we had the opportunity to read the thoughts of legionaries, potters, carpenters, sailors, housewives, slaves, and prisoners, who knows if we wouldn't be more aware of what history is.
(Fabrizio Caramagna)
The city of Brindisi has ancient origins dating back to the pre-Roman period and its history is strongly linked to its natural port, considered one of the most beautiful in the world. In the Roman period, Brindisi became an important port with nearby Greece and the East and was later connected to Rome by the Via Appia and the Via Traiana. The historic center of this important city on the coast of Southern Italy is a continuous series of religious buildings in Romanesque style and the queen of all is the Cathedral. Within its walls, many centuries of history: it saw the crusaders gather in prayer before setting sail for the Holy Land, Roger being crowned king of Sicily, Frederick II ‘Stupor Mundi’ marrying Isabelle of Brienne and much more that made it famous. Brindisi is rich in churches and of particular historical, architectural and artistic interest is certainly the fascinating Church of San Giovanni al Sepolcro, clear evidence of Brindisi's relationship with the Holy Land. With a circular plan, the temple is a perfect copy of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Moving along the seafront, in an atmosphere suspended between the Middle Ages and the East, we reach the famous Roman Columns, the terminal point of the historic Via Appia Antica, which joins Rome after 530 km. From the columns, a large staircase looks out to sea, on its natural internal port, dominated by the mighty Monument to the Italian Sailor that dominates the city. The Ancient City of Brindisi is also delimited by a series of fortification walls, to defend the city and which end in the suggestive Swabian Castle wanted by Frederick II as his fortified residence. Among historic medieval buildings, monumental fountains, historical finds and cultural attractions, Brindisi represents the ideal destination to enjoy a fascinating journey through history. A land rich in history to be explored, discovered, and told.

The Itinerary.
1) BRINDISI TOURIST PORT (slow travel).
The port of Brindisi is a tourist, commercial and industrial port among the most important in the Adriatic Sea and its history is closely linked to Rome, as demonstrated by the terminal columns of the historic Appian Way. The internal port is made up of two deep inlets, to the north and east known as Seno di Ponente and Seno di Levante, which determine the particular shape of this fascinating natural port. The exclusive and branched morphology of the natural port of Brindisi, (in the shape of a deer's head) is the result of the erosion caused by the mouth of the waterways, which have formed a river valley. By slowly traveling along this fascinating port, it will be possible to admire and enjoy all the beauty of the city's waterfront, with its prestigious monuments and medieval buildings that surround and characterize it.
2) FONTANA DELL IMPERO (stop on board).
The Fountain of the Empire is a monumental fountain located at the foot of Piazza Santa Teresa, on the seafront of Brindisi, close to the ancient Messapian Walls. With rigid and severe lines, the fountain was made of green marble and dedicated to Benito Mussolini in 1940. A very interesting work to observe and which perfectly represents the rigid and identifying characteristics of fascism.
During a short stop, it will also be possible to admire, in the distance, the mighty Catello Svevo defending the city and the other bank of the city, which will give us a glimpse of the characteristic Fishing Village of Brindisi.
3) TEMPLE OF SAN GIOVANNI AL SEPOLCRO (stop with visit).
The Temple of San Giovanni al Sepolcro, represents a clear testimony of the close relationship between the city of Brindisi and the Holy Land.
This particular church, turns out to be the most faithful replica of the rotunda of the Anastasis in Jerusalem.
The structure, characterized by a particular circular shape, preserves inside some frescoes, representing saints and sacred scenes.
During the stop, it will be possible to visit the temple and the internal garden independently.
4) PONTIFICAL BASILICA CATHEDRAL OF BRINDISI. The Cathedral (stop with visit).
The Cathedral of Brindisi, or the Basilica of San Giovanni Battista, was built by 1143. Its first stone was laid by Pope Urban II in 1089 and subsequently due to the earthquake of 1743, it was rebuilt and subjected to various restorations.
Inside, fragments of the mosaic floor are visible, valuable paintings from various eras, a chapel dedicated to the relics of San Teodoro, Patron of the city together with San Lorenzo and many other prestigious historical testimonies. Also interesting to observe are the bell tower, the bishop's palace and the Seminary building, which represents a rare example of Baroque in the land of Brindisi.
During the stop, it will be possible to visit the interior of the cathedral independently.
5) TERMINAL COLUMNS OF THE APPIAN WAY (stop with visit).
The Roman Columns represent the symbol of the city of Brindisi. Known as the symbol of the end of the ancient Appian Way, they probably represented a monument that celebrated the victory (or the hope for such an outcome) on the occasion of the departure (or return) by sea, of a military expedition. Of the two original twin columns, built after the middle of the 2nd century, only one remains due to an earthquake that caused it to fall. The column is surmounted by a Corinthian capital, decorated with acanthus leaves and twelve half-length mythological figures.
During the stop, it will be possible to admire the columns up close, observe the house in which the great poet Publius Virgil died, learning more about his history, admire in the distance the mighty Monument to the Sailor and the characteristic Alfonsino Castle that surrounds the sea.
5) PIAZZA SANTA TERESA (slow walk).
Piazza Santa Teresa is certainly one of the most fascinating historic squares in Brindisi. The square rises above the city's Messapian Walls and offers a particular view of the inner city port. On the side of the square stands the characteristic Church of Santa Teresa, which with its particular baroque structure in carparo tuff, colors the square. Dominating the square with an important commemorative work of Italian sculpture, stands the Monument to the Fallen of Italy, commissioned to the Brindisi sculptor Edgardo Simone. The work was dedicated to the memory of the approximately five hundred Brindisi soldiers who fell on the battlefields of the First World War and with its particular sculptures, it tells the memories of battles experienced. Walking slowly through this fascinating square, it will be possible to admire and photograph the beauty of the panorama and the monumental works that characterize it.
6) PALAZZO GRANAFEI NERVEGNA (stop with visit).
The sixteenth-century Palazzo Granafei-Nervegna is a particularly important building in the city, characterized by a Renaissance façade with important Baroque influences, particularly in the elements of the stone balconies. The palace belonged to a family originally from Constantinople, who, to escape from the Turks, had to take refuge in the territory of Brindisi. Inside there is a museum of the Roman and pre-Roman era, with the remains of a Roman domus and in the main hall the original Capital of the Roman Columns is exhibited. Up close and at eye level, it will be possible to admire all the beauty of the original capital exhibited in the palace.
6) ARCHAEOLOGICAL AREA OF SAN PIETRO DEGLI SCHIAVONI (stop with visit).
The archaeological area of San Pietro degli Schiavoni, corresponding to a large portion of the Roman town of Brindisi, was brought to light in the years between 1964 and 1966, when the demolition of houses in the neighborhood of the same name began. When the first archaeological remains emerged, the extensive excavation began, which brought to light an archaeological area of about 4,800 square meters, now partly made accessible under the New Municipal Theater. The Roman-era district of the entire archaeological area is particularly rich in elements and finds from the ancient Roman city, in which the remains of domus with mosaic floors are clearly identifiable. The visit inside the structure will take place on an elevated path, which will allow you to explore and expand your knowledge and history of the site, through information material present along the internal path.
- 2 HOUR HISTORICAL TOUR:
The 2-hour tour also includes a stop and visit to the following historical attractions:
7) MONUMENT TO THE ITALIAN SAILOR (stop with visit).
The Monument to the Italian Sailor is a rudder-shaped structure about 53 meters high, which stands out over the port of Brindisi. The work was built to commemorate the approximately 6,000 sailors who died during the First World War, at the behest of Benito Mussolini, then President of the Council of Ministers of the Kingdom. The structure is made of reinforced concrete entirely covered in golden stone and the construction work lasted a year, from 1932 to 1933 with the inauguration taking place on 4 November 1933, in the presence of King Vittorio Emanuele III. At the base of the structure there is also a particular crypt in the shape of an overturned hull, in which there are numerous black marbles bearing the names of the 5,992 fallen since the unification of Italy up to the date of the inauguration of the Monument. On the upper square of the monument, there are two anchors that belonged to the Austro-Hungarian light cruiser and two cannons belonging to Austro-Hungarian submarines. During the stop, it will be possible to visit the monument independently, which will offer a suggestive view of the city.
Note: The structure is equipped with a lift and to reach the top it will be necessary to go up only a few flights of stairs.
8) CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA DEL CASALE (stop with visit).
The church of Santa Maria del Casale, declared a National Monument in 1875, is a Romanesque-Gothic building built at the end of the thirteenth century and was a destination for pilgrims traveling to the Holy Places and home to the chancellery of the trial against some Knights Templar of the Kingdom of Sicily. The structure mixes Romanesque, Gothic and oriental elements, as can be seen from the gabled façade with bands of ornamental designs of two-colored stones. The walls are largely covered with 14th-century frescoes, still of Byzantine forms but with some linear Gothic contributions. During the stop, it will be possible to visit the church independently.
